I actually purchased the TOPS Mini Hoffman Harpoon neck knife almost as a “B-side”, along with a more desired knife, in order to avoid shipping fees. As it turns out, it was very happy serendipity indeed. I have medium-sized hands, and this knife has a quite compact, just barely 4-finger grip for me, which I happen to really like… very compact, without feeling cramped. If you could swap out your index finger for a blade, that is what this little knife feels like in the hand; it’s that natural to hold and point. But, I can see where it might begin to feel small in much larger mitts than mine. It is a diminutive brute (3/16″ thick 1095 steel) with a very acutely pointed, kiridashi-angled, high flat-grind blade. A skinning knife it is not; this thing appears happiest draw cutting, scraping, whittling, drilling, and stabbing all day long. TOPS’ high quality is evident throughout, from the shaping of the knife’s geometry, to it’s evenly applied tough coating, and lastly to the green paracord wrap, which is VERY tightly and ergonomically applied. The cord wrap is what makes this little knife feel so “organic” in the hand. Although, if you’re not careful, the sharpened back of the blade on my example at the deeply curved finger choil could potentially draw blood for a carelessly placed finger. Happily, a light swipe of a file will easily and quickly smooth this possible snaggle tooth. This is only an issue, because of this little knife’s “cozy” dimensions. Most TOPS Hoffman knives seem to come with leather sheaths, and this one is no exception (my Tops Hoffman Lite Hunter also has a leather sheath, although it’s for belt or inside pocket carry). With this Mini Harpoon, I love the sheath as much as I do the knife itself! The sheath is exceptionally well made for the price point, and the satin black leather construction and fine stitching make for a unique and premium-looking neck carry. If you’re looking for a rugged, well constructed, very compact yet usable neck knife, that just feels natural in the hand, you’ve certainly found one in the TOPS Hoffman Mini Harpoon.
