I have Ka-Bar Model 1292 made of D2 tool steel, and compared to 1217, weight balance of 1217 is better and even lighter than 1292 due to the heavy metal pommel on 1292.
A handle (which I prefer to be leather) is slightly thinner on 1217.
1217’s USMC logo leather sheath looks cool on the outside, but 1217 and 1292 sheaths both have a very tight secondary lock that holds knife to belt sheath.
