1 review for Boker Plus Escape Hawk

  1. Cal (verified owner)

The Escape Hawk is a very small hand axe (hatchet). The cutting edge profile is excellent for this type of tool, the handle is very well shaped and comfortable in any position along its length. It may be gripped close to the head for careful work, anywhere along the haft for a variety of tasks or at the knob for swinging cuts. At 9.13 inches long and an actual weight of 14.29 oz. it will not be cutting through any large materials. The sheath is nice and fits well, better than many Boker offerings. SK5 steel is an ideal steel for striking tools, comparable to 1084. The Escape Hawk is advertised to be 58-60 HRc; however, in sharpening the one I received, it seemed to be a little softer than 58, which may be a good thing in a hatchet. This tool may be easily carried in pocket or pack, is comfortable in the hand and is capable of gaining a very fine edge. It is comparable to the Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet (10 in long) having almost identical cutting edges. The geometry of the tool, handle and head, is excellent. Overall, the Escape Hawk is an excellent tool and handy for small hatchet jobs and some knife jobs. It should not be considered a primary chopping tool.
